Two fires broke out early Friday morning in Waldoboro, one of which resulted in a resident suffering burns and the deaths of three pets.

The Waldoboro Fire Department responded to a fire at a single-story home at 801 North Nobleboro Road at about 2:20 a.m., Shannon Moss, a Department of Public Safety spokesperson, stated in a news release Friday evening.

Two occupants evacuated, Moss said, but one man sustained burns to his shoulder and neck and was transported to Miles Hospital in Damariscotta. Two cats and one dog died in the fire, Moss said, though another dog was rescued by the owner.

The roof in the center of the home collapsed and a large portion of the front wall was destroyed. One firefighter fell through the floor at one point during the response but was uninjured, Moss said.

Investigators from the state fire marshal’s office determined the residents were using propane space heaters inside the home to help keep it warm, Moss said, but the cause has not been determined “due to competing accidental causes.”

Around 7:00 a.m., Waldoboro firefighters responded to another fire at 2231 Friendship Road where they found a barn attached to a home ablaze.

Two occupants escaped and were uninjured, Moss said, and firefighters contained the fire to the barn, though the home did sustain minor damage.

The cause of that fire was determined to be electrical in nature and accidental, Moss said.
