OTISFIELD — The Maine Warden’s Service was investigating Friday night after a plane flipped onto its roof on Thompson Lake.

No one was injured when the plane flipped on the ice off Cove Road at about 4:30 p.m. Officials later said that the pilot had been trying to make an emergency landing due to mechanical difficulties.

Soon after the mishap, the pilot of the plane alerted emergency dispatchers that no injuries were suffered in the wreck. The pilot had been flying alone, officials said.

The plane is a 1946 Piper Cub owned by a Maine woman, according to the tail number.

Wardens were expected to have the plane hauled to shore as they begin an investigation into the cause of the crash.

A resident from Cobb Hill Road had called for help after spotting the plane on its roof. Fire and rescue crews from Otisfield and Oxford responded to the area.

The Oxford County Sheriff’s Office later issued a press release stating that the matter had been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration for review.
