Gov. Janet Mills’ recent State of the State address emphasized her support for Planned Parenthood, her determination to defend citizens against an aggressive federal government, support of alternative energy and maintaining health care for Mainers. The response from one Republican legislator? “Evil is at work here in the State House. It’s alive and well, and it’s got a real foothold in the Democratic Party.”
Want to talk about evil? On Pennsylvania Avenue, we have a president who threatens allies; sends thugs to intimidate perceived enemies in states where he lost the vote; maintains our dependence on fossil fuels for his oil buddies; and takes health care and food support from our most vulnerable citizens to create a billionaire windfall.
The inability to offer even mild criticism of the president’s actions shows the breathtaking hypocrisy of his followers. When the migrants have been rounded up and the mega-wealthy don’t pay taxes, what will their party platform be? Perhaps it will be perpetually guided by a presidential list of “evil” groups and citizens to let them know exactly who will be demeaned next.
