A bomb threat closed Fort Kent’s high school and middle school on Tuesday.

First responders arrived at the Fort Kent Community High School and Valley Rivers Middle School around 9:35 a.m. following a report of a handwritten note found in a bathroom stating there was a bomb in the school, Fort Kent police Chief Michael DeLena said in a news release.

The school building was evacuated and students and staff were transported to the University of Maine at Fort Kent Sports Center, a UMaine System spokesperson said.

Additional Fort Kent police, Maine State Police and members of the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene, DeLena said. Law enforcement, along with a school faculty member and maintenance staff, conducted a search and determined it to be safe, DeLena said.

“The Fort Kent Police Department takes all threats to the public, whether great or small, seriously and considers them all credible until determined otherwise,” DeLena stated.

The threat was specific to the high school and middle school building, and while classes were dismissed there, the nearby Fort Kent Elementary School went into a “soft lockdown,” the chief said.

In a letter to families of Maine School Administrative District 27, which includes Fort Kent and surrounding communities, Superintendent Benjamin Sirois said that students were able to return to collect their belongings and vehicles after the building was cleared.

Classes will resume Wednesday at the high school and middle school, Sirois said.

An investigation is ongoing, DeLena said.
