David R. Hopkins

LEEDS – David R. Hopkins, 74, of Leeds, passed away peacefully on Feb. 20, 2026, at the home he built with loving family by his side, following a brief, courageous battle with cancer.

David was born in Lewiston on July 20, 1951, to the late Robert L. and Christine M. (Violette) Hopkins. He attended Lewiston schools and graduated with the class of 1970. As a young adult he enjoyed playing hockey and softball and spending summers at the family camp on Cobbossee Lake. During the latter part of his high school years he went to work in the family flooring business, Royal Flooring Co., Inc. For 52 years he enjoyed the art of installing various types of flooring, both commercially and residentially, where he took pleasure in his client’s appreciation of the meticulous work he performed. Eventually he and two brothers became co-owners, as the second generation took over the business.

David was passionate about woodworking and after retiring in 2017 he set up a sawmill and cut his own lumber. He enjoyed many hours in his wood shop building or refurbishing furniture for his children and grandchildren. David enjoyed fishing at his favorite spots, snowmobiling, working with wood, DIY projects with his children, but most of all relaxing with his family in the Rangeley Lake area and the Murphy’s camp on Moosehead Lake. He especially loved spending memorable time with his kids and grandchildren. David will be dearly missed by so many but remembered for his strong work ethics and willingness to help others.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Janet (Kenney) Hopkins; daughter, Krista M Hopkins (Laura); son, David M. Hopkins (Tiffani); stepdaughters, Holly M. Higgins (Joe) and Heather L. Dixon (Scott), Eric Hopkins (Lisa); five loving grandchildren, Conner N. and Kylee J. Dixon, Benjamin C. Hopkins and twins Violette A. and Brody M. White; two brothers, George Hopkins (Dawna), Bob Hopkins (Anne); sister, Diane (Sissy) Berube; childhood friend, Mike Clements and longtime friend, Michael Adkins; brother-in-laws Russell (Kay), Maylen (Judy) and Kendall Kenney; sister-in-law Karel Kenney (Pierre) as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents and brother Leonard.

As we remember David, let us not dwell on his passing but celebrate the extraordinary life he led, the lives he touched, and the love he shared.

Per David’s wishes there will be no memorial or funeral services. The family would like to especially thank and commend Andwell Health Partners for their compassionate care and family support during David’s final weeks at home.
