Regarding the Feb. 21 article “Could Maine’s next governor be an independent?,” it is time we retire the outdated notion that politicians are “independent” simply because they list no party affiliation. The only true test of independence is whether or not candidates and incumbents accept corporate campaign money.
The writer claims there are six independents running for governor; this is highly doubtful unless all six have publicly stated they will refuse any and all corporate cash. I find it misleading and offensive that the media reinforces this antiquated perception that marking oneself “independent” on paper is an honest assessment in today’s elections awash in corporate influence.
