Maureen O’Sullivan (Witter) Swain

BETHEL – Maureen O’Sullivan (Witter) Swain went home to be with her Lord on Feb. 27, 2026. She passed peacefully at her home of more than 60 years in Bethel after a long life well lived.

Maureen was born to John Lester and Leah Katherine (Daniels) Witter in Berlin, NH on April 27, 1933 and grew up in Gilead, Maine, where she helped her parents run a small general store. She spent a couple of years in Connecticut when her parents worked in a munitions factory during the war. She graduated 8th grade from the one-room schoolhouse in Gilead and attended Berlin High School, graduating from Gould Academy in 1950. She completed her Nurse’s Training in Concord, N.H., then worked in Chicago and New Orleans before returning to Maine.

She married Ruel Swain in Oct. 1960 and had two children while living and working on the farm. She was also the bookkeeper for Bethel Oil Company which she owned with her husband, Ruel.

Maureen was predeceased by her parents Leah Katherine (Daniels) and John Lester Witter; her beloved siblings, John Witter of Bethel and Joyce Collins of Natchitoches, La., and her husband of 54 years, Ruel Swain.

She is survived by her son, Ed Swain and his partner Stacy Millett, her daughter Katherine Healy and her husband David; two grandchildren, Danyelle (Swain) Paulsen and her husband James, and Blaine Ayotte and his wife Laura of Wilder, Vt.; three great grandchildren, Amelia Paulsen, Charles Paulsen, and Elijah Ayotte. She is also survived by a beloved niece, Brenda Collins Stamey of Natchitoches, La, and her husband David, and two special nephews, Eddie Collins and his wife Mary of Lafayette, La. and Dannie Collins and his wife Molly of Natchitoches, La. She also leaves behind many great-great and great-grand-nieces and nephews and other beloved family and friends.

She was a devoted member of Pleasant Valley Bible Church since its founding. She will be remembered for her warm, ever-present smile and pleasant loving nature.

Funeral services will be held at Pleasant Valley Bible Church on April 11, 2026 at 11 a.m. with viewing before.
