NORWAY – Wayne Clinton Gammon passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, 2026, with his family by his side, after a very short illness. He was 79 years old.

Wayne was born on Oct. 18, 1946, the second of five children, to Clinton R. Gammon and Jean Mae (Field) Gammon. He grew up in Hartford and also lived in several other towns throughout Maine.

Wayne graduated from Buckfield High School and was drafted soon after. He joined the Marine Corps in December 1965 and convinced his brother David to join along with him. Together, they had boot camp training at Paris Island, South Carolina. Wayne had further training in construction engineering at Camp LeJeune, North Carolina, then proudly served two tours of duty in Vietnam from 1966 to 1968. He was honorably discharged as USMC Sgt. Wayne Gammon on Dec. 13, 1968.

Wayne married Melissa Goodrow in 1969 and together they raised their two daughters, Sandy and Sonya.

Wayne had a long, exciting career. Some highlights of his work were the years he spent as an ice road trucker, supporting the building of the Alaska Pipeline in the mid-1970s, and as a crane operator on construction jobs in the south and on the North Slope of Alaska in the 1980s. He returned to the Alaska oil fields to finish his operating career in the early 2000s. Throughout his adulthood, he made numerous road trips from Maine to Alaska and back again, often with dear friends.

Wayne was a loving son, brother, father, “Bumpa,” and friend. Aside from his career, he enjoyed family dinners, suppers at the VFW, visiting with friends, and telling stories of his life’s adventures.

He is survived by his daughter Sandy Mealey (Rick) of Farmington, and Sonya Dillon (Patrick) of Bethel; his siblings, Kay Hawkins, David Gammon (Amy), Debbie Davis (John), and Kevin Gammon (Charmae); his four grandchildren, Lydia, Sophie, William, and Joseph; one great-granddaughter, Katherine.

The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful caregivers at the Maine Veterans’ Home in South Paris.

A celebration of Wayne’s life will be held at Chandler Funeral Home, 45 Main St., South Paris on June 7 at 11 a.m. with burial to follow at Damon Cemetery in Buckfield. To make an online condolence please visit http://www.chandlerfunerals.com
