NORWAY — The Alan Day Community Garden will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 20, at the UU Church, Main Street.

At this point, the organization is “planting seeds” by making plans to develop more community outreach, expand composting, organize mapping, build trails and educate residents about growing their own healthy food.

There are plans to include an herb garden this year and increase signage. There are also hopes to paint a mural on the barn, build a bridge over the stream, build a composting toilet and create a perennial herb garden.

The garden will rent plots to local residents at a cost of $20, but participants will also need to volunteer six hours in the community garden.

Last year, the garden donated hundreds of pounds of produce to the community luncheon, the high school and the local food pantry. So far, several families and individuals have signed up for plots and the organization hopes to inspire more. If interested, attend the meeting or contact Katey Branch at 743-2423.

At the last community meeting in February, participants combined to place a bulk seed order. Seeds will be available for pickup at the meeting.

Another goal of the group is to plan activities for children, working in coordination with the Norway Memorial Library, Rowe School and the Extension Service.

The garden accepts donations to cover its expenses. They may be made by check to Alan Day Community Garden and sent c/o Ken Morse, Healthy Oxford Hills, 181 Main St., Norway, ME 04268.

The garden will also accept donations of new or gently used rakes, shovels, hoes, manure forks, wheelbarrows, pruning sheets, scythes, saws, baskets, garden hoses, and gardening books of all kinds.
