It’s been a fun winter comparing the weather predictions of the good-natured folks at the nearly 200-year-old Farmers’ Almanac in Lewiston against an equally good-natured fox at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray. We’ve seen snow. We’ve seen rain. We’ve seen Stormy in some truly fabulous headwear.

But now that spring has officially arrived, we have to say goodbye to Stormy and the almanac and tally up the forecast results of the lighthearted competition we’ve had in this space all winter.

But first, last week’s results. This final weekly furcast wasn’t a decisive victory, but we’re giving it to the Farmers’ Almanac.

While Stormy predicted it would be windy, rainy and warm over this past week, the almanac called for fair weather. And fair weather it was. Mostly. Although two of the past seven days did include snow or rain, five were fair. It was a tough call, but we let majority rule on this one.

And the overall Furcast winner is …

The Farmers’ Almanac! In the past 13 weeks, the almanac — using science and secret formulas — correctly predicted the weather four times. Stormy — making her pick by choosing from three piles of food appropriately labeled — correctly predicted three times. Together, fox and almanac were right three times. And three times neither was correct.
It was a slim margin, but the Farmers’ Almanac — represented by almanac editor Peter Geiger — is king.
Sorry, Stormy. Better luck next time.
