LEWISTON — Jean-Francois Latour, one of Canada’s most talented young pianists, will give a recital of compositions by Brahms, Schubert and Ravel on Saturday, April 9, at the Franco-American Heritage Center.
A native of Quebec, Latour established himself as a rising star long before his undergraduate and master’s degree work at the Universite de Montreal. At age 11, he made his orchestral debut with the Orchestre Symphonique de Trois-Rivieres. He went on to perform with several other orchestras, including the Baltimore Symphony, Victoria Symphony and l’Orchestre Symphonique de Quebec.
Following study in Montreal, he completed the Artist Diploma program at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore. He also received an Artist Diploma from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto.
Latour was named Young Soloist of the Year 1998 by the Societe Radio-Canada, and some of his live performances have been broadcast on radio in Canada, the United States and overseas.
He has given concerts in Paris, Toulouse, Geneva, Hamburg, Brussels, South Africa, Japan and China, as well as cities in the United States.
His honors include several first prizes in the Canadian Music Competition, a top prize in the Stepping Stones Competition and first prize in the Concours National de Piano de Sucy-en-Brie in France.
His interest in the interdisciplinary arts resulted in collaboration with the Compagnie Marie Chouinard for the choreographic work “24 Preludes by Chopin.” His first recording, released in 2007 with ATMA Classique, features the music of Chopin.
Latour teaches piano at the Universite de Sherbrooke. He lives in Montreal with his wife, pianist Andree-Anne Perras-Fortin, with whom he performs as the Fortin & Latour duo.
The recital will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $16 for adults, $14 for seniors; students admitted at no charge. All seats reserved. For tickets, call 689-2000 or visit www.francocenter.org. The Franco center is at 46 Cedar St.
