TOPSHAM — Brunswick artist Barbara Taylor will give a talk on Sunday, April 10, at an open house for her exhibit, “Wearable Art: Tunics, Jackets, and Vests,” showing at Maine Fiberarts.
Using simple lines reminiscent of traditional Japanese and Chinese stylings, Taylor is noted for her use of decorative Japanese hand-stitching known as Sashiko, which translates to “little stabs.” Sashiko originated as a running stitch used in the repair of clothing in ancient times while doubling as a modest embellishment, often integrating patterns from nature.
The reception will run from from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Maine Fiberarts Center/Gallery, 13 Main St..
Taylor’s talk, “Resources for Clothing Design, Patterns, Fabrics, and Sashiko Stitching” will be from 2:30-3 p.m. The event is free.
Taylor will also host a two-day sewing “Patchwork Jacket Workshop” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 16 and April 30. Participants will be guided through the design and transformation of a sweatshirt into an adorned, colorful jacket using machine applique techniques. Reservations are required, fee for participation.
“Wearable Art: Tunics, Jackets, and Vests” will be on display through April 30. Maine Fiberarts is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
