PERU — Selectmen on Monday set the date for the annual town elections and referendum for Tuesday, June 14, from noon to 7 p.m.

There will be an informational meeting Tuesday, May 24.

The board voted to place the Peru Conservation Commission on the referendum with no recommendation from the Planning Board or selectmen. Resident Bill Hine initiated the article, which addresses conserving resources in the town.

The commission of seven residents would compile a report giving information pertinent to the proper utilization, protection and potential development or use of all open areas in the town.

The board also agreed to have Town Clerk Vera Parent seek technical help with the new computer systems. Formerly, the town relied on volunteer help, but Parent said the time has come to see about contracting technical support.

The board voted to request bids for cemetery maintenance. The deadline for submissions is April 18 at 5 p.m.

The board was advised of legislation related to the qualifications for the position of municipal officer.

LD 1297, if passed, would prohibit a municipal officer or selectman from being an employee of that same town at the same time he or she is serving as a municipal officer. It only affects municipalities that don’t have town managers.

For Peru, Selectman Rick Vaughn, who is a public works employee, and Selectman Kathy Hussey, who is secretary to the selectmen, would potentially be affected.

Hine said the legislation would impact a lot of small towns that have few people to fill available jobs.

Board Chairman Laurieann Milligan was absent so a review of the Personnel Policy was not done. Hine said he thought town employees should recuse themselves from any discussion of the policy.

Selectman Tim Holland said he thought the discussion should be open to the employees, but they would not vote on the policy.

Hine said it’s legally a gray area to have employees be a part of the discussions.

Road Commissioner Joe Roach had questions on how to address comp time for his employees. The board will be setting up a workshop on how accumulated comp time could be used.
