Winnie Asselin
AUBURN – Winnie Asselin, 102, of Auburn died Monday, August 2, 2021 at Clover Manor Health Care Facility in Auburn.
She was born in St. Agathe, Maine on Feb. 6, 1919 to Marie Dube Pelletier and Willie Pelletier one of 11 children to reach adulthood. She received her education under the direction of Daughters of Wisdom. Winnie moved to Lewiston in 1937 at the age of 18 to join her oldest sibling, Yvonne.
She initially worked as governess for the Wellehan’s. During the war she worked at Androscoggin Mill. She then resumed working at Raytheon, Billen Shoe and retiring from GE in 1982.
After the war she met and subsequently married Thomas Asselin on Nov. 6, 1948, who passed away in 2009 after 60 years of marriage. They had two sons, Daniel and Robert.
She was a lifelong communicant of Prince of Peace Parish (St. Peter’s and Paul Basilica) and a member of Daughters of St. Anne.
She lived by herself until the age of 101 when she moved to Clover because of health reasons. From an early age she was a hard worker and needed to keep busy. Until the last year of her life, she knitted, sewed, did crafts and baked. She believed in the idea of “use it or lose it”. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be missed by her nieces Lorraine, Rachel, Joline and Connie who stayed in contact with her until several days prior to her passing.
She is survived by her sons and spouses, Dan and Karen of Lewiston and Robert and Denise of New Gloucester. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Cynthia Grimmett of Lewiston, Shelley Grumman of Sanford and Lisa Asselin of Homer, Alaska; as well as great-grandchildren Alysson, Nathaniel, Sophie and Webster; a brother Roger Pelletier of Plainville, Conn.; and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Tom and nearly all her siblings except for one.
The family wishes to thank Clover Health Care and Androscoggin Home Health Care and Hospice for the care that they provided for Winnie.
A Memorial Mass honoring the life of Winnie will be celebrated on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the Basilica of Sts. Peter & Paul (Lower Church). Committals services will then follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery. There will not be any visitation.
