Loaves & Fishes is a charity that serves Sabattus area residents with help to pay bills, food, furniture and clothing. It has no federal or state grants and exists strictly because of the generosity of donors, people who attend fundraisers, and clients who are able to repay the monetary help they received.

The charity works closely with the town of Sabattus’ General Assistance program that refers clients to the charity if they don’t fall within GA’s strict eligibility guidelines.

It’s a struggle to help everyone who comes to our door, but we try to help our neighbors struggling in tough times.

The governor’s proposed budget wants to cut General Assistance to cities and towns and make changes that disqualify people from getting assistance with their most basic needs. If that happens, local charities and food pantries will be overwhelmed and unable to meet all the needs.

People in crisis will find themselves without food, heat, shelter and other basic needs. Individuals will suffer and so will our communities by increased homelessness, emergency room visits, hungry children at school, and crime — all costing taxpayers more in the end.

That is not acceptable.
