SOUTH PARIS — Cora Lulu DeCoster Dunn, 88, passed away at Market Square Health Care Center surrounded by her family on March 29.
She was born on June 29, 1922, in Hartford, the daughter of Donald and Mildred (Bonney) DeCoster. She graduated from Buckfield High School in 1940.
She married Bernard “Bunny” Dunn in 1943, and together they raised six children. They lived in East Sumner at Happy Valley Farm until 1959, when they moved to Buckfield.
In the early years of her marriage, Cora was a homemaker and mother. After the family moved to Buckfield, she cleaned houses for many local people. For many years, she along with her father and her sisters, Lilla and June, and later several younger family members, picked apples for Kenneth Cooper. When she spoke of those times, the hard work was never mentioned, but rather the fun they had as they worked side-by-side in the crisp fall days.
Later on, Cora began work as a custodian at Buckfield Jr./Sr. High School, and she continued that job until her retirement in 2007 at the age of 85. Upon her retirement, Cora Dunn Day was proclaimed for the town of Buckfield.
There was nothing she enjoyed more than time spent with her family, whether it was a holiday celebration, a trip to camp, a Sunday dinner, or watching a grandchild’s sporting event. She was an avid Celtics fan, rarely missing a game on TV, and she also enjoyed going to breakfast or lunch with her many friends. For a woman who never drove a car, she was never at a loss for transportation.
She was proud of her brother’s accomplishments and she had a special bond with her sisters; memories of good times with them were cherished. She traveled to many places with her sister, June and brother-in-law, Robert Perry, and one of the places she most enjoyed was Canada Falls. She was a hard worker, and she did what needed doing with a smile on her face as she did it and a sense of accomplishment when she was done.
Cora was a friend to all, finding good in everyone. She was appreciative of anything that was done for her, yet she expected nothing. She loved her home and her family deeply and unconditionally, and she loved life, living it simply yet fully and with great gusto.
Survivors include a brother, Lester (and Barbara) DeCoster; sister, Donna Crockett; sisters-in-law, Madeline Brown, Martha Dunn and Ruth Dunn; as well as many nieces and nephews; her daughters, Lynda (and Gene) Bell, Lorraine (and Wally) Litchfield, Joanne “Jody” (and Les) Douglass, and Cathy (and Jeff) Chandler; her son, Bernard “Porky” (and Cindy) Dunn; grandchildren, Beth Kilgore, Ellen (and Carroll) Payne, David (and Julie) Bell, Clark Bell (and Corina Tancrede), Kelly (and Ray) Day, Timothy (and Carissa) Litchfield, Michael Litchfield (and Steve Borstelmann), Rebecca Litchfield, Kristen (and Rick) Nichols, Jason (and Erika) Douglass, Lisa Rioux, Heather (and Chris) McKenna, Martina, Christina and Jeffrey Chandler, Trisha Dunn (and Rick Nadeau); great-grandchildren, April, Anna and Julia Payne, Jennifer and Emily Bell, Tara and Liam Day, Collin Bell, Kali and Nolan Litchfield, Shane and Logan Nichols, Cora Douglass, Carly and Lauren Rioux, Justin and Jordan McKenna, and Shelby Nadeau; a great-great-grandson, Aiden Colby.
