FAYETTE — A public supper and presentation on the possibility of a neighborhood crime watch will be held on Saturday, April 9, at the Fayette Central School.

The supper will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with a menu of pasta, salad and homemade bread. Donations amount will be accepted for the Keep Me Warm program.

During the meal, representatives of the Maine State Police and Kennebec County Sherriff’s Department will present information regarding the creation of a formal neighborhood crime watch program in Fayette. The event is being held in response to an increase in criminal activity in the town over the last six months.

In response, State Police recommend that a Neighborhood Watch type program be established. Many of the crimes in the past couple of years have been associated with the increase in prescription drug diversion and dependency. A large percentage of the overall crimes in the State Police Troop C area are related to this same problem, officials said

A Neighborhood Watch program would be initiated with the help of the Maine State Police and the Kennebec County Sheriff’s Department.

The meeting will open two-way communication and recommend ways to secure residents’ property to reduce the chance of becoming a victim. The session will also be the first step in possibly having a core group of concerned citizens meet on a regular basis with law enforcement to discuss issues and to work on collaboratively in reducing crime in town and report back to townspeople.
