FARMINGTON – Selectmen agreed Tuesday night to get more information before beginning work on transforming the donated building on Franklin Avenue into a police station.
Voters on April 2 unanimously accepted the gift of the building from Franklin Memorial Hospital and to spend up to $490,000 on renovations. With interest on a 20-year bond, the total cost is $653,386.
Foster Vocational Technical Center offered to have its students work on the roof, garage and vinyl siding, and Bunker and Savage contractors proposed to bring the building up to code.
Some asked whether the tech school schedule would meet the town’s labor schedule. Also, it’s unclear who will install the security system.
Board and community members said they were still riding the wave of emotion from the unanimous vote.
“We were all ready to move in that Saturday night,” police Chief Jack Peck said. “We tried to brainstorm to see how we can save money, too,” he said.
“We want to do everything we can to save,” said board Vice Chairman Morgan.
“We can do some shopping around in the meantime,” Town Manager Richard Davis said.
Also at the meeting, three UMF students received approval to hold a community art celebration at the Meeting House Park gazebo May 7. The family-friendly festival will include live music and is an effort to connect the community and university through art appreciation.
Elected officers of the board, besides Morgan, were Chairman Stephan Bunker, and Secretary Dennis Pike. The board welcomed newest member Jessica Berry.
