LEWISTON — Police are investigating a report of Halloween candy tampering.
Acting Chief David St. Pierre said his department received information Monday morning from someone who said they found “metal shards and staples” in a few pieces of candy that were opened Monday.
The caller, who lives on College Street, described for police the areas in Lewiston and Auburn where he trick-or-treated Sunday, St. Pierre said.
A Facebook post by the caller cautions parents to check their children’s candy. The caller posted that he was in the Farwell School and Sabattus Street area collecting candy.
Police are investigating the caller’s report.
St. Pierre said police had received no other reports of Halloween candy tampering from anyone else as of Monday afternoon.
“As is the case every Halloween season, we certainly urge all parents to inspect any and all candy they receive before eating it,” St. Pierre said.
“Our department certainly takes this complaint seriously and will make every effort to determine the veracity of the claim and/or to locate and prosecute any individual who may be responsible.”
