LEWISTON — On the morning of April 30, eight amateur radio operators from the Androscoggin Amateur Radio Club were among more than 400 participants and support staff at the 2011 MS-Walk.
Amateur Radio Service Operators, more often referred to as “hams,” provide communications support at various public service events free of charge. Hams provide emergency communications support during disasters such as this spring’s widespread floods and tornado outbreaks. The public service events provide opportunities to exercise their communications skills and equipment.
The Automatic Packet Reporting System was used to help track the location of the support-and-gear truck and a spotter on a scooter. For more information, contact the AARC, PO Box 1, Auburn ME 04212-0001 or visit w1npp.org.
