Donna Spugnardi, dressed in the Cat in the Hat costume, greets Auburn police Chief Phil Crowell at the Ready Read celebration and awards breakfast at the Green Ladle in Lewiston on Friday. Crowell was one of the recipients of the Yellow School Bus Award for his efforts in promoting early literacy. Other award recipients were Monica Redlevske of Androscoggin Head Start, Adel Silverman of the Lewiston School Department, Tahlia Chamberlain of Auburn Adult Education Literacy Volunteers-Androscoggin, and Stephanie Gelinas, Jen Hogan and Shawn Wright of the Rotary Club. The Ready Read program is an effort to get children’s reading skills ready for kindergarten.
