PARIS — The McLaughlin Garden’s Lecture Series is back for 2022 every Wednesday in March in a new hybrid format. The lectures on garden-related themes will be in person at the McLaughlin Garden but individuals may also request a link to watch the lecture live at their homes.
The series kicks off with newspaper columnist Tom Atwell on March 2. Known as The Maine Gardener, his topic is “Tools: How to Choose Them, Use Them and Take Care of Them”. On March 9, Oxford County Cooperative Extension Agent Rebecca Long will explain “Gardening From the Ground Up: the Basics of Soil Science for Gardeners”.  The colorful “Habitat Garden at Valentine Farm” will be the illustrated subject for Barbara Murphy from the Mahoosuc Land Trust on March 16. Patti Cormier, director of the Maine Forest Service, will discuss “Unique Characteristics of Trees” on March 23. The final lecture on March 30 will be by Becky Moening of Swallowtail Gardens, and last summer’s head gardener at McLaughlin, on “Surprisingly Simple and Low Maintenance Container Gardening for Busy People.”

The lectures will begin at 4 p.m. upstairs in the historic Tribou home at 97 Main Street, South Paris, where Bernard McLaughlin lived with his wife. Tea will be served at 3:30. Donations are requested for the upkeep of the garden. If there is a storm, please contact the garden to make sure that the presentation has not been canceled. Those requesting the zoom link (if the live lecture is canceled, the Zoom link will be unavailable) may do so by contacting the garden at (207)743-8820 or by emailing info@mclaughlingarden.org.  Those attending in person will be asked to follow CDC guidelines. It is hoped that everyone attending will be vaccinated. Current mask guidance will be followed.
