Masses in Spanish are set for seven Maine communities during Lent, which runs from Ash Wednesday, March 2, to Holy Thursday, April 14.
Mass will be celebrated at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church on 65 Mellen St. in Portland. In addition, the Stations of the Cross will be presented in Spanish at 6 p.m. Fridays of Lent at Sacred Heart Church.
Throughout Lent, Masses in Spanish will be held in:
• Brewer: St. Teresa Church, 425 S. Main St., every Sunday at 8 a.m.
• Cherryfield: St. Michael Church, 51 Elm St., the first Sunday of each month at 1 p.m.
• Lewiston: Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, 122 Ash St., every Saturday at 6 p.m., live-streamed at princeofpeace.me
• Pittsfield: St. Agnes Church, 238 Detroit St., Every Friday at noon.
• Portland: Sacred Heart Church, 65 Mellen St., every Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
• Sanford: Holy Family Church, 66 North St., second and fourth Sunday of each month at 5 p.m., live-streamed at stthereseparishmaine.org/livestream
• Waterville: Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, 101 Silver St., every Saturday, 4 p.m.
Funded largely by the annual Catholic Appeal, the Office of Hispanic Ministry assists the Hispanic community living and working in Maine by offering Masses in Spanish and sacramental preparation, including marriage and baptismal preparation; faith formation for adults and children; education on social service support in the state; and help to individuals and families in becoming more involved in parish life.
With the Latino community in Maine estimated at more than 20,000, the need for outreach has never been greater, according to a news release from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland.
