ANSWER: It is wonderful that proms are happening this spring and that the WLU can hold this popular event. I hope Sun Spotters will take part in this by donating formal wear so that all young women, no matter what their financial circumstances, can attend their prom, if they wish.

The Woman’s Literary Union of Androscoggin County is a nonprofit organization whose mission is the intellectual, cultural, and educational advancement of its members and of the community, and to preserve the Foss Mansion.

If you have been a recipient of a prom dress from WLU in the past and would like to share your story with Sun Spots readers, please write. I will not print your name if you prefer.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Thank you for mentioning my sewing business in Sun Spots on March 2. I am in Litchfield, though, not Bowdoinham.—Katie, Litchfield

ANSWER: I apologize, Katie. I hope you pick up some great projects. Sewing skills are so needed and it is not something everyone knows how to do nowadays. Katie’s number is 207-212-1587, and she prefers to get text messages regarding your sewing needs if possible.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: What causes yellow stains on my clothing under the arms? I have tried switching deodorants, but it does not seem to help.—No name, no town

ANSWER: Applying too much deodorant or antiperspirant can leave residue on your clothing that can make stains worse. Also, if you have not already, stop using antiperspirant and go to an all-natural deodorant. The main ingredient in most antiperspirants is aluminum and that, combined with the salt and other minerals in sweat, is the culprit of yellow armpit stains on your clothes.

The best way I know of to remove those stains is with one part Dawn dish soap or Suave clarifying shampoo mixed with two parts hydrogen peroxide. First, sprinkle baking soda on the stain and rub it in, allowing that to work for about an hour. Using a soft brush, scrub in the Dawn or Suave mixture, then wash as normal.

Of course, there are all kinds of commercial stain removers, some of the best being Spray ‘n’ Wash or OxiClean Stain Sticks.

It is recommended not to use bleach on those stains. It could make them set even more and could also damage the fabric.
