Caleb Valliere, 9, of Sabattus shows Terry Tracy of Litchfield a mouse skull that Valliere discovered inside a sterilized owl pellet during Forestry Day at Carrie Ricker Middle School in Litchfield on Thursday. Students spent the day learning details of the forest such as how a decomposed log spurs new growth, the diet of an owl and secrets to outdoor survival. Tracy is on the Smithfield Plantation Board of Trustees, a co-sponsor of the event with the Litchfield Conservation Commission. Valliere’s third-grade classmate Quintin McKay is at right.
