Atte Edwin Hertell

OXFORD – Atte Edwin Hertell, passed away at his home on Friday, April 8, 2022, with his loving family by his side. Atte was born in Greenwood, Maine, on April 20, 1932, to Atte and Helen (Heikkinen) Hertell. He attended grade school in a one room schoolhouse in Richardson Hollow, later attending West Paris High School, before being drafted into the United States Army, where he served two and a half years.He married his love Betty Truman, on April 1, 1961. They just celebrated their 61st anniversary.Known to many as “Edwin” or “Woody” he had a very deep love of his Finnish heritage, and the very special “Turnip pie” his wife Betty would make for him on a Saturday night along with the baked beans and red hot dogs.When he retired, he and his wife Betty traveled, one of his favorite places was Nashville, to the Grand Ole Opry, and to Alaska twice, to see his son Tom, where he caught his first king salmon.His daughter Pamela would often take him and Betty on day trips and out to eat at the Clam bake so he could have his favorite seafood Clams.His greatest joy was his wife and children and his only granddaughter Danyelle who spent many sleepovers there, and his “boys” great grandsons Ryan and Broox, who called him Kukku with a special handshake. His devoted love of sports was his favorite pastime, especially the Red Sox, where he would travel to see them in his younger years, Ed would always say “SISU” is what got him to almost 90, and his great faith in God, and his family and friends. Ed was also an avid hunter and loved fishing, as he was also a member of the Norway Paris Fish and Game Association. He was also a member of the Finnish American Society of West Paris.Ed is survived by his Wife Betty, his son Tom of Alaska, Daughter Pamela and grand daughter Danyelle and great grandsons Ryan and Broox of Oxford, brother Henry Hertell and wife Doris of South Paris, sister Alice Forbus and husband Waly of Arizona, inlaws John and Janice Laselle of Norway and Edward Truman of Otisfield, along with many nieces and nephews.
