The Winthrop Maine Historical Society plans to host an afternoon tour of the Viles House and its gardens on Saturday, June 11, at 71 Stone St. in Augusta.
Tours are set for 1-2:30 and 3-4:30 p.m., with a limit of 30 people per tour.
This tour is a fundraiser for the historical society. All proceeds will benefit the Winthrop History and Heritage Center, according to a news release from the society.
This is a catered event.
The Viles House was the home of William and Elsie Viles. It originally was owned by Daniel Weston. He had the house designed by a New York architect and it was built in 1847.
William and Marion Viles purchased the house in 1930 and had it enlarged and totally remodeled to a Greek Revival.
Marion Viles passed away in the early 1950s, and William married Elsie Pike in 1955. After Bill’s passing in 1986, Elsie continued living there until her death in 2013.
