BUCKFIELD — Members of the armed forces joined American Legion Post No. 58 members for the Memorial Day Parade before large crowds Monday.
Timothy Cooper served as acting commander as Commander Richard Pope looked on with members of the auxiliary from a parade wagon.
Service personnel, including Patrick Therrien, operations specialist chief from Lewiston, representing the U.S. Navy, participated. Kathy Turner and children provided the drum beat for marching. She said she was possibly the last of the East Butterfield Militia that was organized some 30 or 40 years ago for the Hartford Centennial.
The Buckfield Junior-Senior High School Band marched under the direction of instructor Ethan Wright. A choral group from the school sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at memorial.
Cooper spoke about the purpose of the observance: to honor the heroic dead. He said though their bodies sleep in peace, in veterans the souls go marching on.
Post Chaplain Bill Rice gave the benediction as Wendy Therrien prepared to toss flowers into the river in honor of those who have died at sea.
Hailey Perry played taps at the Buckfield Damon Cemetery after a three-gun salute.
