LEWISTON — L/A Arts Executive Director Odelle Bowman and Lewiston Public Library Director Rick Speer will co-host an Arts In Education Certificate Presentation from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the Lewiston Public Library, 200 Lisbon St., in the Callahan Room. The program is open to the public and will recognize the extraordinary 2011 artistic efforts of students and schools in Lewiston and Auburn, with the presentation of certificates wrapping up L/A Arts’ busiest arts in education year ever.

At the presentation, students and artists will receive certificates of achievements, and schools will be recognized for their outstanding collaborative work in bringing arts in education to their schools. Several artist/performers, who worked with students throughout the past year as well as several student/performers, will demonstrate their talents at the event.

L/A Arts’ Artist in Residency Program hosted 17 artists over the school year. In all, more than 5,000 students and 350 teachers attended performances or took part in classroom-based residencies.

Most of the school-based artist residencies ran from Feb. 15 to early May this year, although a few short programs remain on the roster for the end of this year. During a residency, a professional artist, who has established success in both their field of art and as educators, work with a particular class or grade level, to teach those students about that art genre. Included this year were drumming, mime and dance, storytelling, paper and book arts, drama, poetry, graphic novel writing, musical lyrics, singing history and comedy.

Geiger Elementary featured Michael Wingfield who collaborated with L/A Arts and the school to provide an intensive weeklong workshop for the entire school, culminating in a school wide performance — parents invited — on the last day of the workshop week. In addition, Geiger Elementary hosted Randy Judkins, who brought storytelling and movement instruction. Both programs were made possible by combined L/A Arts funding and parent association funds.

Below is the list of schools and arts in education programs for this year.
