100 years ago, 1911

One of the latest occupations is being pursued by F. C. Bailey and J. W. Bennett. They are running a produce boat around Lake Auburn to accommodate the people in the cottages. They have a large power boat and carry, butter, eggs, milk, ice, garden stuff, wood and anything that the people may want. It has been difficult for the people in the cottages to get these fresh supplies and this boat “fills a long felt want” in more ways than one.

50 years ago, 1961

A total of 283 students are attending Lewiston summer school classes, the Education Board was informed yesterday afternoon.

In addition, School Supt. J. Weldon Russell said between 40 and 50 other students are taking private math instruction from LHS teacher Isadore Shapiro.

The regular summer school agenda does not include math, according to the superintendent, because there were not sufficient applications for this course.

25 years ago, 1986

As a result of a court order disallowing the housing of juveniles at the Androscoggin County Jail after June 1, County Commissioners were updated on plans for a temporary holding area until a new juvenile detention center can be completed sometime early next year.

On Friday, the County Commission asked architect Wendell Milliken of the Brunswick firm of Moore, Weinrich to develop plans for a 48-hour holding area in the former civil defense office of the County Building.

Milliken told commissioners he and consulting engineer George Liming would have to contact the state corrections officials to determine what would be needed to create the temporary area.
