LEWISTON — The Lewiston CareerCenter continues its monthly programming, including workshops for job seekers and those who are considering training to upgrade their skills to increase the employability. Workshops are held at the CareerCenter, 5 Mollison Way, Lewiston. Some workshops are available at Central Maine Community College and the Auburn Public Library, as noted.
Career Decision Making is a two-part workshop. On Monday, participants will discuss tools to help make career decisions. On the second day, they will use the information gained to make career plans. Registration is required. Offered June 7 and 10, or June 21 and June 24, 9 a.m. to noon.
Industry Information Tuesday will feature the health care industry. A panel of experts followed by a group discussion will allow participants to learn, and ask questions about jobs, training and skills needed. Registration is required. June 21, 9 to 11 a.m.
Non-Traditional Occupations for Women will feature an NTO specialist to explore NTOs for women: types of jobs, pay rates, employers with NTO opportunities, transferrable skills, self-assessments, training, etc. Registration is required. Gateway to Employment workshop gives an overview of basic information on resumes, interviews and job search skills, as well as CareerCenter and community services that are available during a job search. Registration is required. Offered every Thursday, 1 to 4 p.m.
Job Search Tips for People with a Criminal History workshop is for people who have a criminal background and are having trouble finding work. This workshop will help them become a successful job seeker. Registration is required. Offered June 3, 9 to 10 a.m.
Job Search Skills workshop, facilitated by a CareerCenter staff person, is also offered at the Auburn Public Library. This workshop will help participants conduct an effective job search. They will learn how employers advertise and hire and methods they can use in their job search that will lead to success. Resume Basics and Interview Skills explores the basics of resumes and applications and learn how to make a resume and interview stand out in a positive way. Participants will learn to market themselves in a way that directly matches employer needs. “Tough” interview questions will be discussed so they can answer them with confidence. Greater L/A Unemployed Professionals Group meets every Monday from 1 to 3 p.m. to support unemployed and underemployed professionals. Group discussions cover professional development and job search strategies. Topics for June include: “Keeping Motivated during Your Job Search,” June 6; “Utilizing a Staffing Agency during Job Search,” June 13; “Open forum,” on June 20; “Self Esteem and Job Loss,” June 27.
CareerCenter Training Orientation is an overview of training programs at the CareerCenter, eligibility requirements and information on accessing services. Ask CareerCenter staff for the schedule of meetings and to register (required).
Essentials of College Planning for Adults features the basic steps for successful college enrollment: learn about college and trade schools, entrance requirements, readiness and transitional issues of adult students, admissions procedures and financial aid. Review a typical admissions application, request admissions materials and financial aid information from prospective colleges. Participants will complete the financial aid form. Bring last year’s income tax forms. Register by calling 800-281-3703.
An Adult Education Representative will help participants explore options to improve their job skills and which adult education programs or classes will best meet their needs based on your interests and career goals. Available Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11 a.m.
