LEWISTON — The Center for Wisdom’s Women will host playwright and actress Cheryl Hamilton to talk about her play, “Checkered Floors,” at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 23.

Cheryl returned to Maine after college amid the arrival of Somali migrants. Her play weaves together the hilarities and horrors of her homecoming as she works to help her new neighbors make homes of their own and addresses issues of sexual assault and immigrant integration.

Other highlights at the center in June include a new class led by Pat Gardiner called “Neighboring Faiths.” It will meet on Monday afternoons at 1 to explore the faiths we encounter in our life and world, city and neighborhood.

The second monthly class on “Addiction and Families” will meet at 10 a.m. on June 17, when Lise Pelletier will talk about finding serenity amidst chaotic situations when a friend or family member is addicted. An Al-Anon lunch group meets weekly on Wednesdays from 12:15 to 1:15.

June will feature two self-help events. On Thursday, June 16, Cindy Leavitt (aka “The Tooth Fairy”) will be onsite to offer free tooth cleaning. Sign up for this dental hygiene opportunity at the center. On June 21, Shikara Desormiers will lead a program called “From Head to Toe” in which she will share 10 tips to relax and revitalize yourself. The program will include, for some who wish, a soothing foot bath.

Wisdom Circle with Sarah Wood from the Sexual Assault Crisis Center will meet at 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons, June 7 and 24. This is a support group that focuses on a topic of wellness and self care. Denise Dill from St. Mary’s Nutrition Center of Maine will teach her monthly class at 10 a.m. Monday, June 13. The focus is on eating well on a tight budget and includes sampling of seasonal dishes; participants go home with a recipe for each.

Shanna Rogers from the Neighborhood Housing League is at the center each Tuesday from 9 to 10 a.m. to consult with anyone about landlord and tenant issues.

The Fibromyalgia Support Group meets on Monday mornings 10:30 to noon. A writers workshop gathers every Monday morning at 10:30. Other regular programs include a painting class; a scrapbooking group and card making class; and small groups that focus on building self-esteem and Bingo. June birthdays will be celebrated on the 24th.

The center is located at 57 Blake St. between Ash and Pine streets and welcomes all women. All programs are offered free of charge. Due to renovation work on the facility in which the center resides, programs in July and August will move temporarily to the upstairs of Trinity Episcopal Church, on the corner of Bates and Spruce streets.
