The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office is hoping to speak with a potential witness to the July 23 pedestrian crash that left one woman dead and another under arrest.
Police and rescue crews responded at about 10:30 a.m. on that Saturday to a report of a woman on the ground on County Road, near Fortin Drive, with life-threatening injuries. According to the report, Tina White, 46, had been walking on the dirt shoulder facing traffic when she was hit from behind. Her injuries were consistent with a vehicle hitting her from behind while she was walking, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
White died of her injuries.
A short time later, deputies discovered Amber Smith, 36, passed out behind the wheel of her vehicle in front of a Turner business on Auburn Road, and her vehicle showed damages consistent with the crash, police said. Smith was arrested on charges of manslaughter, aggravated operating under the influence of drugs causing death and causing death while license is revoked. She remains jailed.
“Just before the crash occurred a citizen reported to an Auburn Police officer on Lake Shore Drive in Auburn of a suspected drunk driver in a white SUV,” sheriff’s officials wrote on Friday. “This information was given out to other officers but the vehicle was not immediately located. The sheriff’s office is looking to speak with the citizen who made the report. The citizen can contact Deputy Jim Phillips or Chief Deputy William Gagne at 207-753-2599.”
