100 Years Ago: 1922

“We’re going to build this highway,” declared Mr. Darling yesterday. “And we are not going to stop there. Sometime In the near future we will continue the boulevard around the Lake, and will then possess one of the most beautiful drives in the country.

He briefly sketched the plan. If the popular subscription highway continues around the lake it will connect with the state road which will be built along Center streets and Mount Auburn Avenue next year. Mr Darling was enthusiastic  about the plan.

A Lake Auburn boulevard has been talked about for years, but action has never been taken.

50 Years Ago: 1972

A night hawk believed to be only a few weeks old, was found on the sidewalk on Lower Lisbon Street in Lewiston by Roger Walker and Patrick Chabot, both of the Jordan School Road, Auburn. The bird was taken to police headquarters.

The Journal’s bird expert says that although commonly known as night hawk, the bird really isn’t a hawk. It usually nests on flat roofs and in fields and is quite useful in getting rid of harmful insects, it’s said.

25 Years Ago: 1997

Hannah Matthews of Lewiston. foreground, plays the queen and Brenda Wylie is the Zelda the Witch as they rehearse the play “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” in the basement of the L/A Arts building on Lisbon Street in Lewiston Thursday morning. The play is free and open to the public and will be held at 6 pm Friday at the Community Little Theater-Great Falls School on Academy Street in Auburn.
