JAY — One person remained hospitalized Sunday following a Saturday night head-on collision in North Jay that sent seven people to area hospitals in two counties.

Officer Russell Adams of the Jay Police Department said Sunday that six of the seven people transported following the crash on Route 4 had been released from the hospital. The driver of one of the vehicles — a Chevrolet Suburban — remained hospitalized.

Adams said the accident occurred at 10:30 p.m. on Route 4, also known as Main Street, in North Jay near the intersection of Macomber Hill Road. The Suburban was southbound on Route 4 when it crashed head-on with a northbound Ford Explorer.

There were six people traveling in the Suburban and one in the Explorer. Adams said that not everyone was wearing seat belts.

The crash remained under investigation Sunday. Adams said police were not yet releasing which vehicle drifted across the center line. Drugs and alcohol are also being investigated as possible factors in the crash.

Jay police were assisted Saturday night by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office and Maine State Police. Route 4 was closed for nearly four hours while the Maine State Police reconstructed the crash.

Fire departments from Jay, Wilton and Livermore Falls responded to the crash, as well as NorthStar Ambulance.
