OXFORD — One police officer was treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene of a kitchen stove fire at the Oxford Pines Regency mobile home park off Skeetfield Road Thursday evening. No other injuries have been reported.

Fire and Rescue Chief Paul Hewey said a neighbor called 911 to report the fire at 60 Glen Street just before 6 p.m. when they noticed smoke coming from the home. The department had crews at the scene within three minutes of the call being made and quickly extinguished the fire. Norway, Paris and Poland fire departments also responded.

The fire caused heavy smoke to fill the home and when fire fighters could not convince the occupant to leave, Oxford police were called in to assist. The person barricaded themselves in a bedroom but was eventually removed and taken for evaluation. The identify of that person has not been released.

Hewey said the quick arrival of firefighters likely stopped the mobile home from burning flat and saved the life of its occupant.

“This situation shows the value of having paid staff prepared for emergencies like these,” Hewey said. “If our department had to rely on volunteers to respond during off-hours this would have had a very different outcome.”

The state Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
