WINTHROP — For the fourth time this year, Winthrop couldn’t escape the big inning by its opponent as undefeated West Paris overcame a 5-2 deficit with a six-run fifth innings and topped the Red Sox, 11-5.
Ian McCarthy, Dave Ricker Jr. and Tavis Hasenfus collected seven of the 10 Red Sox hits on the day and accounted for all five runs early, but Winthrop (2-5) could not hold off the Westies (3-0).
Dave Ricker Sr. held West Paris to three hits and two runs through four innings on the hill by way of the knuckleball. But things changed in the fifth, when WP sent 11 men to the plate, pounding out seven hits to take the lead.
Westies starting pitcher Joe Baker setttled down after three innings and held Winthrop scoreless the rest of the game with help from Mark Hreben. Lance Bean’s double and three singles led the Westies’ 18-hit attack. Mike McBride, Jarod & Jerry Verrill and Eben Gillman also repeated for West Paris.
Hasenfus led Winthrop with three hits, two runs and two stolen bases.
