To the Editor:
In the letter of thanks published last week acknowledging the folks who helped in the celebration at Paris River Park on August 13, we attributed authorship of the Clean Air Act to Senator Muskie. He did contribute to and sponsored that legislation, but is credited with authoring the Clean Water Act, enacted in 1972 and celebrated this year at the 50th Anniversary.
The Senator from Rumford, Maine was called ‘Mr. Clean’ by his colleagues for an array of environmental legislation. On the 13th, both the air and the water were cleaner because of his efforts. But this year, the Clean Water Act was the focus (except in the first line of the appreciation).

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
