BETHEL — Following approval of the 2011-12 budget for Regional School Unit 44 this week, Andover residents will meet at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Town Hall to discuss how to raise money to keep its school open for at least another year.

The RSU 44 board voted this year to close the school to save an estimated $214,000 and bus students to Crescent Park School in Bethel. The school is expected to have 25 students in grades kindergarten to five in the fall.

A group of Andover residents have rallied to keep the school open for at least another year, and hope the $214,000 needed to do so will be raised by the town.

Roughly 90 voters overwhelmingly approved a $9.7 million budget Tuesday night at Telstar Regional High School in Bethel. The amount included:

Region instruction $3,677,799; special education $936,011; career and technical education $566, 539; other instruction, co-curricular and athletics $175,030; student and staff support $656,080; system administration $363,410; school administration $566,790; transportation and buses $1,055,725; facilities and maintenance $1,441,568; debt service $274, 348; and other expenditures $15,000.

The board’s recommendation of $1,224,657 for additional local amount was approved 82-4.

A budget validation referendum in the RSU 44 towns of Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock will be held Tuesday, June 28.
