TURNER — The good news: A dog hit by a car on Route 4 on Tuesday night was saved and was doing well a day later.

The bad news: The people who saved him have no idea where the dog belongs.

At about 8 p.m., the dog, a Labrador-shepherd mix, was run over on Route 4 near the mall. The animal, well-groomed and wearing a red collar, was in pain, its hip apparently knocked out of joint.

Animal Control Officer Wendell Strout to the rescue.

Strout was able to capture the dog and take it for medical attention. Between Tuesday and Wednesday nights, it went from one animal hospital to the next and ended up at the Auburn Animal Hospital on Center Street.

“It’s a real good dog, a friendly dog,” Strout said.

The problem is that nobody seems to know where the dog came from or to whom it belongs. Without that information, the town will have to decide about its medical care and how it should be paid for.

Strout believes someone may be looking for their pet. The dog, with a little bit of white on its chin, appears to be older, Strout said.

“It looks like it comes from a good home,” he said. “I just don’t know where that home is.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Turner Town Office at 225-3414.
