TORONTO — Matt Chapman hit two home runs, George Springer added a three-run shot and the Toronto Blue Jays maintained their position in the AL wild-card race, beating the Baltimore Orioles 6-3 on Friday night.

Chapman went 3 for 4 with three RBI and three runs to help the Blue Jays (82-63) win for the fifth time in six meetings with the Orioles.

Adley Rutschman hit a two-run home run and Gunnar Henderson added a solo shot for Baltimore (75-68). The Orioles were unable to gain ground on the three leading wild-card contenders, Toronto, Tampa Bay and Seattle.

Toronto improved to 34-17 when hitting two or more home runs, bouncing back from an 11-0 loss to the Rays on Thursday.

Chapman opened the scoring with a solo homer off Jordan Lyles in the second inning, his first since Aug. 20. He made it 6-2 with a two-run shot off Joey Krehbiel in the sixth. The homers were Chapman’s 25th and 26th. It was the 10th multi-homer game of his career.

RANGERS 4, RAYS 3: Nathaniel Lowe hit his 25th home run in a four-run inning and Texas Rangers won in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Lowe’s two-run homer was the fourth of five straight hits in the third inning off Corey Kluber, who gave up seven straight hits in the first inning in New York nearly a week earlier.

Rangers starter Martin Perez (12-6) gave up three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Three of those were by Rays catcher Francisco Mejia, driving in runs with a single in the second and a double in the sixth.

GUARDIANS 4, TWINS 3: Pinch-runner Ernie Clement raced home from second base on a wild pitch in the eighth inning for the go-ahead run and AL-Central leading Cleveland rallied for a win at home over Minnesota in the opener of a crucial five-game series.

Clement ran for Josh Naylor, who led off the eighth with a single and took second on Oscar Gonzalez’s single. Jhoan Duran’s 2-1 pitch to Andrés Giménez bounced in front of catcher Gary Sánchez and went back to the screen on the fly.

Sánchez couldn’t find the ball initially and Clement rounded third and slid headfirst, beating Sánchez’s throw.

TIGERS 3, WHITE SOX 2: Victor Reyes hit a deep flyball to center field in the 10th inning, scoring automatic runner Ryan Kreidler from third base and giving Detroit win at home.

Tigers reliever Alex Lange (5-4) struck out the side in the 10th, and Willi Castro started the bottom half with a bunt. Liam Hendriks (3-4) fielded it, looked at Kreidler going to third and then bounced his throw to first, putting runners on the corners.

Riley Greene struck out before Reyes hit his game-ending sacrifice fly. Adam Engel made a running catch but had no chance to throw out Kreidler.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

CUBS 2, ROCKIES 1: Marcus Stroman won at Wrigley Field for the first time since signing with the Cubs, pitching no-hit ball into the sixth inning during a victory over Colorado.

Stroman (4-7), who signed a $71 million, four-year contract, had been 0-5 with a 7.11 ERA in nine previous starts at Wrigley Field this season. He didn’t allow a hit until Ryan McMahon homered with two outs in the sixth, his 17th this season.

Zach McKinstry homered and tripled as the Cubs extended a winning streak to four for the first time since mid-August.

Stroman gave up three hits in six innings with two walks and five strikeouts. Brandon Hughes followed and Manuel Rodriguez pitched a perfect ninth for his second save, completing a four-hitter.

NATIONALS 5, MARLINS 4: Joey Meneses hit an inside-the-park home run, Ildemaro Vargas had a go-ahead double in the eighth inning and Washington rallied to win at home.

Washington snapped a five-game losing streak, beating Miami at home for the first time in eight tries this season. The Nationals are 2-12 overall against the Marlins.

Lewin Díaz homered for Miami. The Marlins have lost six of eight and 15 of 19.

BRAVES 7, PHILLIES 2: Ronald Acuña Jr. hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in a six-run eighth inning off Seranthony Domínguez and Atlanta rallied for a victory at home over Philadelphia.

The opposite-field shot erased a 2-1 deficit and touched off a wild celebration at sold-out Truist Park, helping the Braves stay a game behind the first-place New York Mets in the NL East.

William Contreras connected off Phillies starter Ranger Suárez to make it 1-all in the fourth and added an RBI single off Domínguez to make it 4-2. Contreras went 3 for 4.

METS 4, PIRATES 3: Taijuan Walker won back-to-back starts for the first time in two months, Daniel Vogelbach homered against his former team and New York won at home.

Pete Alonso had his National League-leading 113th RBI for New York (91-55), which is assured of its most wins since going 97-65 in 2006. The Mets began the night with a one-game lead over second-place Atlanta in the NL East.

Jeff McNeil, making a rare appearance in right field, saved at least one run with a spectacular catch against the wall that robbed Oneil Cruz.

NOTES

METS: John Stearns, a four-time All-Star catcher with the New York Mets, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 71.

Stearns, who played football and baseball at the University of Colorado, died Thursday night in Denver, according to the Mets.

He passed away less than three weeks after attending an Old Timers’ Day at Citi Field in New York that coincided with the Mets’ 60th anniversary. He was noticeably thin in his Mets jersey on Aug. 27 and waved to the crowd when he was introduced on the field.

YANKEES: Reliever Aroldis Chapman is back from the injured list after missing nearly a month due to a leg infection he sustained from a tattoo.

The AL East-leading Yankees activated Chapman before a three-game series at Milwaukee. They designated right-hander Ryan Weber for assignment.

Chapman, 34, is 2-3 with a 4.70 ERA and nine saves in 36 appearances this season. The seven-time All-Star was replaced as the Yankees’ closer this season after missing nearly six weeks with tendinitis in his left Achilles.

Chapman hasn’t pitched for the Yankees since Aug. 19. He made one-inning appearances for Double-A Somerset earlier this week.

Weber was 0-0 with a 0.84 ERA in five appearances for the Yankees.

Right-hander Luis Severino is expected to return Wednesday when the Yankees host Pittsburgh. Severino, who went on the injured list July 14 with a right lat strain, threw 56 pitches and worked 41/3 innings in a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Wilkes-Barre on Thursday.

BRAVES: Second baseman Ozzie Albies was reinstated from the injured list and recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett ahead of the weekend series against the Phillies.

Albies batted eighth in Friday’s game against Philadelphia. He missed 81 games after fracturing his left foot in an at-bat on June 13 at Washington and needing surgery.

“It feels awesome to be here,” Albies said. “Everything feels normal.”

The two-time All-Star hit .333 in 27 at-bats with a homer and six RBI during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett.

He was hitting .244 with eight homers and 33 RBI in 62 games before breaking his foot.

Albies’ return will make Vaughn Grissom a role player, though Snitker indicated Albies could serve as a designated hitter to get Grissom some playing time at second base.

To make room for Albies on the active roster, the team designated right-hander Jay Jackson for assignment and placed infielder Ehire Adrianza on the 10-day injured list
