Add another name to the list of the tri-county region’s homegrown, Division I athletes.

The University of Maine announced Friday that Brianna Hammond of Greene is one of four recruits to join the women’s soccer program.

Hammond, a graduate of Leavitt Area High School, is one of three in-state players to join the Black Bears. Jordan Pellerin of Waterville and Gretel Breton of Greenville are the others.

Quebec’s Camille Varin-Tremblay also has committed to Maine.

Hammond was the Sun Journal’s all-region player of the year in 2010.

She was a captain and a KVAC first-team all-star each of the last two seasons.

“I chose the University of Maine because of the interactive classroom environment, the women’s soccer coaching staff, and the players at UMaine made me feel welcome and at home,” Hammond said in a university news release.

Said Maine coach Scott Atherley: “Brianna has great potential because she is versatile and determined. I have seen her play virtually everywhere on the field, and she brings something to each position. What impresses me the most about Brianna is that she adapts very easily to the conditions of the game and can effectively figure out what needs to be done relative to her role.”

Hammond is the third Leavitt athlete in three different sports to choose Maine in the last 18 months.

Allison Fereshetian of Turner is competing in track and field after winning multiple Class B state championships.

Courtney Anderson of Greene, who starred for the 2011 Class B champion girls’ basketball team, is attempting to make the women’s basketball team at Maine as a walk-on.
