PORTLAND — Chris Angell of Ellsworth and Ashley Woodside of Hampden captured respective men’s and women’s singles titles at the 42nd annual A&J Open Tennis Tournament, played at the Racket and Fitness Center. The event is sanctioned as an outdoor major by the Maine Tennis Association.

The second seeded Angell, a teaching professional, used his power serve and superior net play to upend top-seeded Greg Janssen of Lewiston 6-3, 6-2 in the championship match.

Woodside, a sophomore-to-be at Hampden Academy, worked her way into an all-unseeded final by beating the No. 1 seed Molly Gilbride of Boston with a 6-3, 7-5 semifinal verdict. Woodside then ousted Chelsie Woods of Scarborough, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 to earn the title.

Other winners included Josh Pendergast of Bangor in men’s 35-and-over singles, Paul Whitmore of Hampton, N.H., in men’s 55-and-over singles, and Parker Swenson of Yarmouth and Hallsey Leighton of Falmouth in open mixed doubles.
