100 Years Ago: 1922

The annual Christmas festivities at Bowdoin College, closed tonight, with a dance at the gymnasium. About 150 couples attended. The decorations were of red and green, the holiday scheme being carried out elaborately and with pleasing effect. Each fraternity had a booth where guests were entertained.

50 Years Ago: 1972

Two young ladies, officers of the Junior Woman’s Hospital Association at the Central Maine General Hospital, will share their Christmas holiday with less fortunate members of the community. In the afternoon on Christmas Day Cindy McFadden, the president, will put on a Santa Claus suit, and Lorraine Chasse, vice president, will become a helper, for a tour of the hospital facilities distributing gifts to all the patients and staff members. Both girls have received their 1,000-hour pins as Candy Stripers. This is the second year they have undertaken this project.

25 Years Ago: 1997

The Federal Revival Style home, with its touch of Spanish influence, that stands at 19 Elm Street in Auburn has been an active part of the Lewiston/Auburn community for 80 years. Horatio Foss, owner of the prominent shoe company, Dingley-Foss began building a house to be “admired” on the premier residential address of Elm Street in 1914. Foss and his young bride moved into this one-of-a-kind mansion in 1917, three years after construction began on this fine architectural marvel. During the turn of the century there was great competition in home building in the Lewiston- Auburn area, as well as the rest of the country. Foss was determined to build a home that “had never before been, according to Toni Ramsey, a member of the Women’s Literary Union which now owns and manages the home.
