LEWISTON — Walter Morrissette Hill, a member of the city’s School Committee and former local Democratic party chairman, will seek the mayor’s chair in the Nov. 8 municipal election.

In a written statement, Hill said he was proud that the city of Lewiston shaped his priorities and values.

“We need to capitalize on our history and heritage by showcasing the clean Androscoggin and all the recreational activities such as kayaking, camping and hiking along our shores,” Hill wrote. “We must tap new economic outputs or watch our children and grandchildren leave Maine in search of opportunity.”

Hill was born and raised in this community and graduated from Lewiston High School. He has worked in sales, marketing and restaurant management with Marriott Corp., where he won the J.W. Marriott President’s Award.

Hill serves and volunteers on many boards, including the Abenaki Executive Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Community Concepts, Trinity Jubilee Center and the Independence Day Committee.

“I have spoken with several city officials and local business owners, and I know we have to grow our tax base in order to have the resources to invest in our future,” he wrote. “As a member of the Lewiston school board, I know we must educate and train our work force for tomorrow. Jobs and education are wedded.”
