Two cats

NORWAY — Responsible Pet Care Animal Shelter is offering reduced adoption fees for people adopting two cats; two for the price of one, through July 31. An anonymous sponsor will provide the funds for the second adoption.

Bridge results

OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met July 8. A 7 ½ table Mitchell movement was enjoyed.

Finishing first in flight A N/S were Marilyn and Richard Canton of Bridgton, who also were first in flight B. Second were Nancy Farmer (Norway) and Marta Clements (Woodstock), third were Rosemarie Goodwin (Lewiston) and Luke Merry (New Gloucester). Bible school

SUMNER — The Congregational Church of East Sumner will hold Vacation Bible School for kindergarten through sixth grade children from July 25-29. The theme is “Encountering God” and will have lots of singing, crafts, Bible skits, recreation and snacks. The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to noon, but children should come early to register. The adults and older youth of the church will be assisted by the youth group from a Spotsylvania, Va., church, who will also be doing community service work in the area. Yankee Brass

PARIS — A concert by the Yankee Brass Band will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday July 29, on the Common at Paris Hill. Concert is free. Bring a chair and picnic.

Bean supper

PARIS — The Ladies Circle of First Congregational Church, South Paris, will sponsor a baked bean supper from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 29.

The meal includes baked beans, casseroles, salads, hot dogs, brown bread, scones and pies. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children under 12.

Puzzle hike

OXFORD — Mahoosuc Land Trust will hold its second “Take it Outside” hike on Saturday, July 30. The excursion will be a 7.5-mile, moderately strenuous hike up Puzzle Mountain. A four-mile option to the ledges is possible. Participants should meet at the trailhead at 9:30 a.m. and bring water, lunch, bug and sun protection. Sign up by calling 824-3806.

OXFORD — Oxford Congregational Church on King Street will have a supper from 5 to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 30. The menu will be chicken, gravy, biscuits, potatoes, mixed vegetables and pies. The cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 5-10, and free for children under 5. The supper will benefit the youth of the church.

Book sale

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Library’s annual summer book sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at the West Paris Grange on Church Street. The items for sale will be organized by type, so browsing is easy. There will be hundreds of good quality new and lightly used books, DVDs, books-on-tape and magazines.

Bridgton carnival

BRIDGTON — The 3rd annual Depot Street Festival will make the first time since the 1970s that a carnival has come to Bridgton. The festival will take place Saturday, July 30. The rain date will be Sunday, July 31.

The event has been moved to the grounds of Stevens Brook Elementary School so that carnival rides could be added. Rides will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. A pig roast will be served at noon followed by the music of Relics and Wrong Road.

Trail Dreams

CASCO — Brad Cook will present the Trail Dreams program to the general public at the Casco Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 31.

Trail Dreams will introduce attendees to the “Three Essential Needs for Happiness” that all people require in order to live happy, spiritually rewarding lives, and it includes a digital slide show of Cook’s 2,200-mile journey along the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine.

Library open house

WATERFORD — The Waterford Library will welcome residents and visitors at an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, July 31, in conjunction with Music Sunday at the Waterford Congregational Church and the Waterford Historical Society’s summer show. Visitors will have an opportunity to see the recent renovations and changes in the library and view displays featuring the renovation project.

A light lunch will be available for purchase on the library lawn.

The library is a Colonial Revival style building designed by noted Portland architect John Calvin Stevens and his son John Howard Stevens.

This firm was also responsible for the rebuilding of the second story after a fire in 1937. The library is part of the Waterford Flats Historic District.

Gun course

BETHEL — An NRA-NMLRA basic pistol, rifle and shotgun muzzleloading shooting course will be held from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at Pooh Corner Farm, Greenhouse & Florist. The cost is $200 per person.
