WOODSTOCK — Woodstock and Greenwood firefighters extinguished a half-acre forest fire Monday morning off Cushing Road.

The fire started when an excavator track rubbed against a rock, causing a spark that smoldered in the dry brush, Kent Nelson, fire prevention specialist for the Maine Forest Service, said.

Nelson said the fire was classified as accidental. He said it is believed to have started early in the morning.

Woodstock fire Chief Geff Inman said seven firefighters from the Woodstock and Greenwood fire departments responded, as well as a PACE truck. No one was injured.

The call came in shortly after 11 a.m. Inman said they had to drag a hose more than 600 feet into the woods to reach the fire. He said they put a “Y” splitter on the water line, attached 200- and 300-foot hoses and sprayed the blaze from both sides.

“It was a quarter of a mile in on a dirt road to a landing, then there was another 600 to 700 feet from there,” Inman said.

He said two Greenwood firefighters were on duty Monday as part of Woodstock and Greenwood’s enhanced mutual aid agreement. According to Inman, a truck was already headed to the scene to investigate a report of smoke when the dispatchers notified them.

As a result, the truck was on the scene within 4 to 6 minutes. Inman praised dispatchers for getting the word out, as well.
