SABATTUS — Lombard’s Pavilion was the place selected by Lewiston Grange and Thornes Corner Grange to hold a joint field day, and although the morning was cloudy and the air was full of mist, each Grange was well represented. During the forenoon the time was spent socially by the elders and children also, if the amount of popcorn, ice cream and candy passed over the counter by Mr. Lombard proves anything.
50 years ago, 1961
Auburn Fire Chief J. Coleman Miller last night expressed his appreciation and that of the members of his department to neighbors who provided firemen with refreshments during the $50,000 blaze which leveled a barn at the Maurice and Raymond Keene farm on the North River Road early Tuesday morning.
Chief Miller said women in the neighborhood provided firefighters with “sandwiches, coffee, cold drinks and cold water” and that these were “very much appreciated” by the firemen.
25 years ago, 1986
A dozen members of the Rumford Senior Citizens picnicked at the Rumford Zoo recently, where they were enchanted by the variety of birds — pheasants, ducks, geese and peacocks, turkeys and parrots. They fed the goats and sheep and admired the African bull, the Maine elk, the coyote and the exotic big cats of the area.
