Donald Bradley Piper

SOUTH PARIS – It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Donald Bradley Piper at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris on Feb. 25, 2023.

Bradley was born in Mechanic Falls on Dec. 6, 1934 to Jacob and Minnie Piper, at the home of his aunt Susie and uncle Will Chase.

He grew up in Mechanic Falls until the late 1940s when the family purchased a farm and moved to Minot. They had many riding horses which he enjoyed taking on long trail rides, his favorite was his white horse, King.

He attended all schools in Mechanic Falls and graduated in the class of 1953. He had many cherished school friends. Brad met the “love of his life” Evelyn (Fritz) Piper, the summer of 1953 at the Oxford Roller Rink and they were married on Sept. 14, 1956. They enjoyed traveling to many places including Prince Edward Island and Puerto Rico. Evelyn says, “Brad was her best friend, pal, and wonderful husband for almost 70 years!”

In 1957, Brad joined the U.S. Air Force serving four years. After serving in the U.S. Air Force, Brad worked at Marcal Paper Mill, the Old Town Paper Mill and in 2000 he retired from the Windham Correctional Center.

Bradley is survived by his wife, Evelyn (who now also resides at the Veterans Home); and his three wonderful nieces, Beverly Needham and her partner Norman Sherman, Rhonda and Bruce Cox, and Sandra Needham. Also, many other nieces and nephews; as well as many caring friends.

Bradley was preceded by his parents Jacob and Minnie Piper; Judith and Richard Needham (sister and brother-in-law), George Piper (brother), Richard and Durward Piper (half-brothers); and Frank and Carroll Piper (close cousins who were like brothers to him).

The family of Bradley want to thank the staff and crew at the Maine Veteran’s Home and Androscoggin Homecare and Hospice for the time they spent with Brad and the great care they gave right up to the final moments of his amazing life. We also want to thank everyone for the many calls and cards. Dana Chandler, thank you for all your help during this difficult time. You went above and beyond.

“Bradley, until we meet again, I love you 385.” – Evie.

There will be a graveside service this spring or early summer at Gracelawn Memorial Park in Auburn.
