In collaboration with the Auburn Public Library, Senior College In the Community plans to host Dr. Charles W. Plummer at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 20, in the Androscoggin Room at the 49 Spring St. library.
Plummer, of Lewiston/Auburn area, will address many aspects of addiction, and how it affects the human brain.
Addiction is a modern day epidemic that claims the lives of 500 people a day and costs the U.S. more than $600 billion a year in health care cost, crime and loss of productivity. Plummer believes that educating people about addiction can play an important role in resolving many problems in society that addiction creates, according to a news release from Diane Clay, Senior College Board member.
He will share discoveries in science that have suggested that addiction can hijack the brain’s natural reward systems. Plummer will explain the process by which use of drugs can lead to dependence and addiction. He will describe many types of addiction, including behavioral addiction.
Plummer served in the U.S. Navy. He taught in the Auburn school system and served as principal for 23 years.
